RC flying is a great past time and can get the family together for a day out at the field. Choosing the right airplane for a beginner is easy and then just hit the skies! Choose a beginning model RC plane is not that hard to fly and make sure you get one that will not discourage the flyer from the start; Many models are easier to fly that others and let me suggest a few beginners for you.
The Nitro Model Super Trainer is a great choice. Made with balsa wood and light ply material, the bigger Super Trainer 60 offers a whopping 70-inch wingspan, making it easier to see, easier to control, thus easier to fly. This will provide you with easier and wider range of flight characteristics that will give you more time to correct mistakes if something goes wrong. If you get a non painted model you should paint it with a color that will stand out against the blue or cloudy skies for ease of seeing.
Some people paint beginners wings different colors on the bottom to help with direction, coming to you or going away. Like green and red lights on a real airplane. One you get flying better you can move on to faster and higher performance RC aircraft models. If you want a low wing aircraft try the Super Aerobatic Trainer for much the same beginner characteristics. Both will provide ease of use, ease of building and years of enjoyment.
These are also great models for kids as they are inexpensive and have an flashy style and paint, much like my son's first one. The Trainer Kit will be an easy model to build in just under an hour for under 0.00. It will also be an easy model for repair with basic materials and you're ready for the skies once again. When I started out there was many times I had to do repairs but that was the fun of it also.
You can also get kits that are from scratch if you like and spend hours constructing a model, maybe better left for the second or third plane. Sometimes it helps knowing how things are put together so when you have to do repairs it's easier, but for beginners I suggest the kit. Either way you'll need basic tools and some minor balsa, surface skins, glue, etc to start. You'll also need a radio control and servos; I suggest a 4 channel and 5 servos set up for the beginning RC plane pilot. This lets you control all the aspects of flight that are necessary to keep you in the air and will not confuse you as you learn the basic flight controls.

Contrary to popular belief, people who work in model shops don't spend all day every day playing with their own models!!!
However on Friday afternoon Dale and myself decided we were going flying with our own models. We closed the shop dead on 6 o'clock (usually we don't leave till gone 7). We were cashed up, loaded up and off to our own secret flying site in Kent by 6.30.
We arrived at the flying field around 6.45, all models still intact after a mad dash along the A2 and some rather bendy country lanes.
First out of the cars were a pair of Weston Cougars, one of my favourite planks (sorry for the term plank but I class myself as a heli flyer). Once started and both airborne there was a really noticeable difference in performance between the two. Dale's is fitted with a OS46LA, whilst mine has a West Eurotech 36 fitted. We both decided to go for height, (when I say height I mean the clouds were getting in the way) Dale's climb rate was respectable but mine climbed like a homesick angel. After a few attempts at getting it to flatspin & some low inverted circuits I was out of fuel, so was forced to land and get the next model out.
The next candidate was a Century Predator Gasser which has had one previous flight. The beauty of petrol powered models is that they are cheap to run & there is no starting equipment required. The previous flight was used to set the model and engine up correctly. After a few tweaks to the engine I was happy with the way she was running I thought we would do a few gentle circuits with a couple of stall turns thrown in for good measure. I must say this is probably the most stable model in the hover I have ever flown. I landed, then passed the controls to Dale for a quick play. He also loved how stable it flew.
The amount of fun you can have with an electric Zagi is amazing. This model is so much fun and so unbreakable, I found myself doing the silliest of things with it. Like skimming across the strip with the prop clipping the grass on its way through, stalling it from up high and seeing who could get the highest bounce when it hit the deck!
Who cares, the chances of breaking it are near nil.
That's how is continued for the rest of the evening.... until we remembered that to fly in the dark - which i used to do on a regular basis - you need 'glow sticks'. ()
So, back to the shop to unload all the models - we both commented on what a great evening's flying it was, probably one of the best this year - we are not trying to tempt fate or anything, but are now charging everything in sight ready for another evening of fun.

Riding on a helicopter still costs too much and flying on a plane is still expensive. Well… not at all.
Actually, some of today’s aircraft can give you the best flight of your life. Not because you are served with the most delightful meal. Not because you are seating on a couch while flying. And definitely not because you are flying 28,000 feet above the ground. But because you experience the thrill, excitement and fun as you take the stick and fly at your own. Yes, you read it right. Fly on your own!
Development of helicopters plus the ambition of companies as well as individuals led to the invention of ultralight helicopter.
An ultralight helicopter is flying machine (it really flies by the way) that usually spans between 12 feet and 25 feet with small fuselage for 1 or 2 passengers. It varies depending on the weight. Usually, ultralight helicopters weight between 150-190 lbs., unmanned.
Ultralight helicopter comes in two forms: the ready to fly and the kit. Ready to fly of course is easy to understand. The kit may be a little too hard to swallow (at least for some).
The Mosquito is one of the more popular brands of ultralight helicopter. It looks like a miniature helicopter due to its size. But what makes it different from the rest is that it is only made to seat one person. Wondering where the novice would seat? This is where excitement would come. Anyone who wishes to learn on a one-seater ultralight helicopter must learn to fly on their own. It can fly with top speed of 90mph and as high as 12,000 feet.
Or if you simply don’t have enough guts yet to fly on your own, there are other ultralight helicopters where you can stay and remain as the passenger and let your flight or an expert do all the maneuvers.
You can enjoy the thrill of flying on an ultralight helicopter on some parks that offer ultralight helicopter tours. You can also purchase one for your personal use at the price similar to that of a family sedan.
Well, that's debatable. For one thing, the inexpensive electric helicopters are very difficult to fly in the wind. Yes you can buy a pretty good one for around 0. The CX is the easiest to learn to fly as compared to the CP and the equivalent, but all helicopters, fuel powered or electric, are difficult to teach yourself to fly. Chances are good you will break many parts in the learning process and most likely give up after spending too many hours fixing, practicing and/or tons of money in the learning process. Hate to discourage you, but this is the reality of RC helicopters.
People seem to think because the helicopters are electric and cheap; it will make it easier to learn how to fly. I've trained something on the order of 300 people to hover and fly helicopters over the years and I know for a fact that is the safest, easiest and cheapest way to learn.
Fuel powered helicopters are difficult to learn to hover and fly, small electric helicopters are even harder and the tiny ones are worse. You will need a large open area to practice hovering and even then, chances are you will break things. This is something you will unfortunately find out after you spent quite a bit of money on your helicopters and replacement parts.
If you haven't already, tried installing a new and/or different type of glow plug. It is possibly there is a hole in your fuel line inside of your tank where the fuel line is attached to the metal pick up. That would cause it to stall when the tank is half empty. The engine might be overheating due to the lean mixture caused by the possible split fuel line. There are so many electric helicopters out there and it depends on what you consider is too expensive.
Save your 0 because buying those helicopters would be a total waste of money. As the saying goes, you only get what you pay for. The same goes for the cheapest electric ARF airplanes. You will need a proper trainer airplane, and any RC warplane is well beyond any beginner's abilities.
Learning to fly RC airplanes is something that is possible to learn on your own, but definitely not recommended. If you ever get a chance to find a club or an experienced flier who will let you fly a proper trainer, then you will see what I'm talking about. I believe collective helicopters are easier to fly than fixed pitched helicopters. You are correct about the CP. The small electric helicopters are for the most part are harder to fly than fuel powered helicopters.
There are several different people who are considered to be the inventor of the helicopter. I could write a book explaining it in detail, but I'll cover a couple of the primary contributors to the development of rotary wing aircraft. The ancient Chinese invented a toy for children that you can still see today. It consists of a propeller and a shaft through the middle of it. If you spin it quickly in your hands or with some other force such as a rubber band you could make it lift up and hover briefly before coming back to the ground.
The first recorded depiction of a possible manned helicopter is a diagram drawn by Leonardo da Vinci in the 1400s. The knowledge of physics necessary to successfully build a working model did not yet exist, but he understood the concept of an "air screw" that if turned fast enough would be able to drive the machine and a pilot into the air.
Over the course of the next few centuries many other people toyed with the idea of a helicopter, but again the amount of power necessary to drive such a machine into the air was not possible to generate. The invention of the internal combustion engine made the power requirement a reality. The next hurdle that needed to be overcome was the concept of torque - the phenomenon that causes the body of the helicopter to spin in the opposite direction of the main rotor.
Paul Cornu invented a working piloted helicopter in 1907, but it was not a successful design. It only generated enough lift for about 7 seconds. Another Frenchman, Etienne Oehmichen built and flew a working helicopter for about 1 kilometer in 1924.
As early as 1910, Russian born Igor Sikorsky began working on development of a manned helicopter. By 1940, his working design had become the model for all modern helicopters. It consisted of a main rotor and a tail rotor that is used to counteract the torque generated by the main rotor. This design is still used in a vast majority of helicopters today, which is why Sikorsky is considered the father of the modern helicopter.
There are many other men who contributed to the development of rotary wing aviation - too many to list here, but a thorough search of the library and/or the internet can give you tons of insight into the development and design of all different types of helicopters.

You may have heard the term, coaxial RC helicopters and wondered exactly what they were. The truth is, you've probably seen one or may even own one. They are the double bladed helicopters you see out there, with two main rotor blades and no tail rotor. The first time I saw one I was wondering not only just what the heck it was, but how does it work? Here I'll tell you all about it!
One thing about them, coaxial helicopters have almost single-handedly brought hordes of new enthusiasts into the hobby with their ease of use. It's hard not to see one of them anymore, and the advent of the micro electric RC helicopters in coaxial mode has opened up the great indoors as a flying ground. Being a very stable in flight aircraft and usually ready to fly out of the box, the coaxial RC helicopter is the only choice indoors.
So how do they fly? The traditional helicopter setup of one rotor blade and one tail rotor is replaced instead by two main rotors, each spinning in the opposite direction. This eliminates the need for a tail rotor, as its only function anyway was to counteract the yaw produced by the one blade spinning in one direction. The only drawback I find in some coaxial RC helicopters is that the two rotors have to be spinning at the exact same rate. In other words, the two motors have to in sync with each other, or the helicopter will not even lift off.
As always, practice safety when operating these birds, as they have two blades (which will hurt twice as much as one!) and should be handled will all the respect you would with any other RC aircraft.
