You may have heard the term, coaxial RC helicopters and wondered exactly what they were. The truth is, you've probably seen one or may even own one. They are the double bladed helicopters you see out there, with two main rotor blades and no tail rotor. The first time I saw one I was wondering not only just what the heck it was, but how does it work? Here I'll tell you all about it!
One thing about them, coaxial helicopters have almost single-handedly brought hordes of new enthusiasts into the hobby with their ease of use. It's hard not to see one of them anymore, and the advent of the micro electric RC helicopters in coaxial mode has opened up the great indoors as a flying ground. Being a very stable in flight aircraft and usually ready to fly out of the box, the coaxial RC helicopter is the only choice indoors.
So how do they fly? The traditional helicopter setup of one rotor blade and one tail rotor is replaced instead by two main rotors, each spinning in the opposite direction. This eliminates the need for a tail rotor, as its only function anyway was to counteract the yaw produced by the one blade spinning in one direction. This makes the coaxial RC helicopter very stable, if a bit slow and unresponsive. It's a great model to learn to fly with, indoors or out, and can help one graduate to single bladed models later on.
The only drawback I find in some coaxial RC helicopters is that the two rotors have to be spinning at the exact same rate. In other words, the two motors have to in sync with each other, or the helicopter will not even lift off.
As always, practice safety when operating these birds, as they have two blades (which will hurt twice as much as one!) and should be handled will all the respect you would with any other RC aircraft.
Coaxial RC helicopters have brought many more people into the enjoyable hobby of RC helicopter flying. If you haven't yet managed to get your own bird into the air, don't wait any longer! Get out there today!
Anyone Can Fly A Model Helicopter? The Electric RC Helicopter Evolution!
RC Helicopters, one of mankind's the most fascinating invention, grab people's attention wherever they are flown. Not surprisingly, RC Helicopters earned its place as one of the most intriguing hobby to pursue. This fact probably came to be because of the addictive, gripping and exciting nature of this leisure pursuit. To add to that, the models themselves represent the finest modern day miniature technology can offer.
Not long ago, very few have ever had the pleasure of getting a taste of flying these amazing machines. For a simple reason - once upon a time they cost way too much to buy and way to expensive to maintain. Alas - many thought this hobby would be and forever remain amongst one of those exclusive to the rich. Also, some people did not like the smell of gasoline exhaust or the loud noise of the engine. Fear not! Those days are gone!
Most people can now very easily afford to fly RC helicopters thanks to the tremendous improvements of batteries, motors, and general electronics in the past few years. These innovations result in a new field of RC - electric RC helicopters - which at the same time opens up a whole new realm of possibilities. These include flying helicopter indoors and right at your own backyard while at the same time causing absolutely no pollution and much less noise. Moreover, maintenance costs which used to scare most people now shrink down so low that it won't hurt your wallet in any way.
Recent technologies also allow these new breed of RC to be built much smaller than their predecessors. This not only fulfills many people's childhood dream of indoor flights, it also makes for easy transporting. Not that it has to be carried very far since it can be flown right at your house. The need for tedious maintenance greatly decreased as well. You can forget hauling around heavy flight box full of equipment. If any repairs became necessary, it can usually be carried out in full with nothing more than a screw driver. Often times repair can be made using bare hands.
Reliability of these electric machines improves greatly when compared to the gas versions because they use electrical motors instead of nitro engines. Electric motors come much cheaper, much less tedious, and much less dirty. Unlike gas engines, electric motor almost never cuts out like an engine does. This means no more stalled engine in mid air!
Don't think for one second that electric flights won't last long. Modern RC models use Lithium Polymer batteries. These types of batteries will allow electric flights to last as long as - or longer - than gas-powered flights. Moreover, when running out of gas, nitro helicopter engines will suddenly cut out. On the other hand, their electric brothers will slowly power down, providing ample time to safely land.
Beginners will find that it's now much easier to get a hang of this hobby. Whereas nitro helicopters can easily draw buckets of sweat from learning pilots, these new electric ones prove much easier to master. No longer are six channels required to fly, now helicopter pilots can start learning at only 2, 3, and 4 channels. Some models even use two main rotors that turn in opposite directions, eliminating the need for a tail rotor. This means one less channel to worry about while learning. And what's more, most of these beginner helicopters fly right of the box. No more spending weeks trying to assemble complicated kits.
On the other hand, for experienced pilots, high-end modessuch as Align's T-Rex 450 and T-Rex 600 offers high performance 3D crafts that will excite even the most avid pilots.
Where once flying a small model helicopter around in your own home was once a far-fetched dream, electric RC helicopters has made that dream a very vivid and extremely enjoyable reality!
Parrot AR Drone and Gyro Flyer - RC Helicopters Race On YouTube.
www.stuff.tv is the best place to go for all things tech. This week, on the Stuff.tv Show, Jools and Lucy have got their hands on two (very different) R helicopters...but which is best? Clearly, the only way to find out is to build a race course and let them loose.
RC helicopter fans enjoy their hobby for the ability to take control of their favorite helicopters. In practicality, it can be difficult to find the time, space and money to fly a range of different RC helicopters, and for the true enthusiast, experiencing a diversity of models gives the best chance not only to learn the craft, but also to try your hand at models that would otherwise be out of reach. The solution? An RC helicopter simulator. These simulators are a great, low-cost way of experiencing the full scope of what different RC models have to offer, all from the comfort of your own home.
So if you're thinking about getting your hands on a helicopter, you should probably think about investing in an RC helicopter simulator, and there are a number of reasons as to why this might provide you with a more suitable and enjoyable flying experience.
Learn The Ropes
The first, and perhaps most obvious reason as to why you would want to get your hands on an RC helicopter simulator is to learn the ropes, and help you learn how to handle a helicopter before you come to fly one for real. For the novice flier, flying can quickly become a costly business, and crashing from a height is likely to do damage to even the most hardy of helicopters over time. An RC helicopter simulator is a great way of avoiding these problems from the outset, and giving yourself the chance to become more familiar with the mechanics and controls before launching into your first real flight.
Try A Variety of Models
When it comes to real life flying, we don't all have unlimited budgets to blow on helicopters. At the same time, you may very well want to experience different models and makes, and there are very few opportunities to experience this diverse range of helicopters. That's where an RC helicopter simulator comes into play. A simulator can, for a fraction of the cost, open the door to experiencing a wide range of different helicopters, without the need to leave home or borrow a friend's copter. That means you can get the most rounded experience from a full range of helicopters across multiple different terrains and landscapes, all for a miniscule up-front investment.
Decide What To Buy
An RC helicopter simulator is not just valuable as a learning tool, and of course trying a range of models is part and parcel of what its all about. When it comes down to deciding which model to actually buy for yourself, a simulator can be highly effective as a shopping aid. It might sound silly, but the advancements in RC simulator technologies mean that they now give a much more accurate reflection of real-life flying experiences, so you can better get to grips with the type of model that fits your needs. When it comes down to deciding which helicopter is best for you, trying them out over a range of different terrains, landscapes and models can give you a much greater insight into the right kind of model for you.
RC helicopter simulator packages are not only great fun, but also highly practical and useful for those that share a passion for helicopters. Whether its as a buying aid, a training aid, experimentation or just for the plain old fun of it, RC helicopter simulators are a great way to test out in the virtual world what you can't achieve in the real world for the purposes of the practical.

If you're are stuck as to whether to purchase an electric RC aircraft or a gas one, here's a few basic things to consider as you make your decision. The Radio Controlled sport has definitely been infused by the infusion of electric RC models, and there are some major differences to consider.
If you're just starting out in RC aircraft, there are several things you'll want to decide. Both types of palnes or helicopters, electric or gas can deliver up loads of fun, That said, some of the things that are different need to be mentioned. You'll definitely spend less money getting started with electric RC aircraft, and they are more readily available, now found at almost any toy store. Gas RC aircraft are most often found only at hobby shops. The ongoing maintenance costs are higher with gas models, and while gas models have generally enjoyed longer flight times than their electric RC counterparts, that gap is shortening as batteries are improving.
Electric RC aircraft are generally easier to learn, while the gas models tend to have a higher durability factor due to more sturdy airframes. If you crash one of these, it may not be fatal. There are considerably more accessories needed for flight operations for gas models of RC aircraft, and you almost certainly need to become a member of a model flying club to even fly your radio controlled planes and helicopters, due to the noisy and oily aspect of the beasts. Electric RC aircraft, on the other hand, are usually very quiet and don't have the environmental impact that gas birds do. Electric models can usually be flown in public places, (watch for posted signs disallowing this!) and are generally easier to get up and in the air than gas models.
With all the new models of RC aircraft hitting the market now, the basic choices boil down to how much time, money and dedication do you want to expend on this. Either way you choose to go, Radio controlled aircraft will deliver up to you hours of rewarding and fun memories. get out there and fly one today!
With all the popularity that electric RC helicopters have enjoyed recently, mainly due to major advances in the control and electronic capabilities, it would be understandable to believe the now common claims of manufacturers who claim that their RC helicopters come RTF, (ready to fly) and leave it at that. In truth there are varying degrees of RTF, and even though with the now cheaper prices you're paying for these electric RC models, you would think there would be some setup, and in fact there most of the time is. Let's just call this buyer be aware!
The first thing to mention is that while RTF may indeed mean that you can actually get your bird into the air, that may not mean that you'll keep it there! There is a learning curve, and while these may be mini versions of the real things, they still will leave a mark if they crash into you or anyone around you. The point is, you need to learn how to do operate your electric RC helicopter, and the best way to do that is in a simulator. There are free ones available, but the best ones cost a bit, but will me than make up for their cost by saving your models from immediate crash and burn!
There may well be things either missing or needing more than actually comes in the box. This is usually related to the battery packs for the RC controller. There are batteries required for this to operate, and if they do come with the kit, they will not last long and soon you'll find yourself needing a battery charger to keep your RC helicopter in the air! (You may want to invest in somewhat better batteries, as well!) Some newer models now actually come with a charger, a step in the right direction!
In general, you will come to find out that most of the truly ready to fly (RTF) models will come in the 2 channel variety, and most of these will be smallish, which is fine, because they will be easier to fly, and for beginning RC helicopter enthusiasts, this is a good thing, allowing them to learn without breaking the RC Helicopter or the budget!
When it comes to RTF, make sure to delve a little deeper and see what is truly ready to fly!
Syma S107 RC Helicopter Review - One of 2011's Hot Christmas Toys
The Syma S107 RC Helicopter is an absolute blast for children and adults of any age. If you have ever wanted a remote controlled helicopter but have always been afraid that it would be too difficult to use, then this new micro heli is the one for you.
This new RC helicopter uses the latest metal gyroscope technology for impeccable control whether you fly it inside or outside. It won't take you very long to get the hang of the Syma S107 RC Helicopter - after just one or two flights with this remote controlled helicopter, you will be an absolute expert.
Syma has created quite a marvel at a great price. You may have heard of other RC helis that run as much as 0, 0, or even more. The worst part is that they often need tons of modifications and take a long time to get the hang of. If you want to get a fun micro heli for a child, you would not want to get a more expensive model like this. They would not be able to fly it correctly and the remote helicopter would spend more time crashing than flying.
That is what is so great about the Syma S107 RC Helicopter - it has simple controls and is incredibly stable which leads to less crashes and more flying time. This is not like the RC helicopter that you had when you were a child. It is stabilized by a special metal gyroscope system that makes smooth takeoffs and soft landings very easy to achieve. After the remote helicopter takes off, it stays in a static position until you control it to move somewhere else - it is really something that you have to see to believe. Many users have commented that it is much easier to control than other Syma radio controlled products, or even radio controlled airplanes. Your son or daughter will have a great time flying this micro heli instead of spending time being frustrated with other products that are harder to operate.
This Syma radio controlled product is really top of the line. It uses three remote channels that control forward and backward, left and right, and up and down. It is controlled by a small hand held remote and will fly for about 10 minutes after being charged for only 20. The whole unit can be recharged by plugging it into a computer via USB cable. This wonderful innovation makes it simple to get more flight time out of this RC heli. Plus, it is made of tough metal and heavy duty plastic which make it extremely durable. Kids can crash it into every wall, chair, and table in your home without doing any damage to it.
Bottom line - the Syma S107 RC Helicopter is the absolute best value in remote controlled toys. For around , you can give your children, or anyone on your gift list, hours and hours of fun. It is a completely unique gift that is so engaging, you may have trouble giving it away.
Will the new Air Hogs "Hawk-Eye" Video Cam Helicopter fly outside? On YouTube.
Please read the Challenge. Here is more fun with toys I wish I had when I was a kid, as I am finally getting to play with them now at age 62! Here I demonstrate how the Air Hogs (to be released Fall, 2010) "Hawk Eye" camera helicopter (for the budding aerial photographers and for the old guys like me), flies outside. IR controlled, so just fly it when the sun is down. Also, it is difficult to see which way it is going at high altitude, so get it trimmed good, remembering not to shut it off in flight, as it will tumble to the ground, but without damage. As you can see, I have really whackoed this little heli and it just keeps going. No damage whatsoever. This may be tame for you purists, but it was fun for me to fly, just to make the video. Plus, having flown lots of big gas stuff, etc, this is a nice little "walk in the park". Who knows what you will do with one. So I welcome and look forward to any video responses you can make with your Hawkeyes, so bring 'em on when you can get them.... More and more hobbyists are getting hooked to the fun and pleasure of flying an RC Airwolf Helicopter. This model aircraft is becoming increasingly popular among enthusiasts as well as newbies because it gives you the ability to control the device just like you're flying a real-sized helicopter--and perhaps even better because model devices are more capable of certain maneuvers such as backwards flight, hovering, and other freestyle techniques.
The Airwolf is actually modeled after the 1980s television series helicopter of the same name, and if you're familiar with it, you can see just how much it resembles the original chopper. Its trademark design is that of a sleek black finish with a white detail in the bottom part, but you'll also find other color variations such as grey and blue.
To give you some general information regarding this super cool and enjoyable hobby, go ahead and read the following points below. You might just realize that this is exactly the hobby you've been waiting for.
Model Types
There are basically two types of model helicopters:
1. Fuel-powered - uses nitro, petrol, gasoline or gas-turbine
2. Electric-powered - uses batteries
There's no definite way to ascertain which type is better because it really depends on each hobbyist's preference. To help you pick the right model, you need to know your budget and the specifics such as the power source, engine capacity, speed controller, brand, and so on.
Average Costs
If you're thinking of flying an RC Airwolf Helicopter as a hobby, the first thing that might enter your mind is the cost involved in purchasing one. The truth is that having your own model used to be quite expensive, but now that it's getting really popular, you will be thrilled to know that the prices have gone down significantly.
The main thing that makes the item costly is its type of power source. Fuel-powered models have always been more expensive--they can go from ,000 to ,000. But despite the high price, they always give quality performance and have longer flight durations (7-14 minutes).
On the other hand, battery-powered devices are more affordable. You can get them for as low as 0, and the more complex models may run up to ,500. Electric helicopters are common among most hobbyists because of its inexpensiveness, but they do have shorter flight durations (4-12 minutes).
Do keep in mind that prices vary according to the manufacturer, engine size and other factors. When purchasing your first chopper, be sure to know exactly what you're going to use it for and how much you're willing to spend. If you plan to enter flying competitions or start a collection, then you might need a more capable brand, but if you're simply using it for recreational purposes, then a more affordable but quality model will do.
Flying Mini Helicopters as a Hobby
Gone are the days when hobbies were only comprised of boring activities like coin collecting, knitting and bird watching. Nowadays, people have much cooler options and have the chance to really enjoy what they're doing. So if you're a hobbyist who's in need of a thrilling outdoor pastime, then flying an RC Airwolf Helicopter is definitely suitable for you! Go ahead and look for your specific model right now so you can start experiencing the breathtaking excitement that this mini chopper brings.
I've been very interested lately in a lot of different models of RC helicopter and as I've been doing my research trying to decide which one to buy next, I've come to realize just how many different types of RC choppers there are!
The first thing you need to decide is whether or not you want to buy an indoor chopper or an outdoor chopper. Now, an indoor chopper is strictly indoors and these can usually be had for around -40 dollars. Outdoor choppers will run you more money but they are usually larger and have better performance over all.
Keep in mind that with some outdoor choppers you won't be able to fly them inside at all. They are simply too big and require too much room to maneuver to make flying them in a typical room unpractical. There are however some models that sort of blur the line between indoor and outdoor like the Madhawk 300 which is big enough to perform outside (as long as it's not TOO windy) but small enough that you can practice indoors. Once you decide on an indoor or outdoor model than you consider these types before making a purchase:
Double Co-Axial Choppers
These are your basic indoor "toy" helicopters. They are easy to fly, easy to maintain and will generally provide a great deal of fun while cruising around your apartment. They aren't suited for outdoors as the slightest breeze will take them high into the air or smash them into the ground (usually causing a lot of damage!). They make a great conversation piece for your office and are perfect for wasting a bit of time!
Single Co-Axial Choppers
Basically the same as the above except some of these are large enough to fly outdoors. They are stable enough that pretty much anyone can get them to hover and move forward without much effort. Again these are beginner choppers.
Micro RC Choppers
These are the ones that you're probably most used to seeing these days. Normally they will fit in the palm of your hand and although the basic gear underneath is usually the same, they come in a variety of styles including Military and Commercial air craft. When they first appeared on the scene these choppers were really nothing more than cool looking toys that did not fly very well but with recent advancements in the technology these choppers are VERY flyable and are perfect for beginner-intermediate users looking for an easy to fly chopper to hone their skills on.
4 and 6 Channel Choppers
These are the more advanced choppers for people who are into modding and upgrading. Probably not a good first-time chopper as they are more expensive and more prone to damage in the event of a crash (and trust me, you will crash them!).
2.4 GHz Remote Systems
These days you should always try and go with a 2.4 GHz remote system. This refers to the frequency that the choppers controls operate on and 2.4 takes up less current than the older systems. Meaning you get more flying time for each charge and in the world of RC Helicopters, flying time is what it's all about!
The Best Chopper?
Well as you can see, it really depends on your level of skill and where you want to use it. But, from personal experience I would recommend: The Syma S107 for an Indoor Chopper and the Madhawk 300 for an indoor/outdoor chopper. Both are priced very reasonably and offer great quality for the money. Please check out my link below for more detailed reviews on both of those choppers as well as other great reviews on all sorts of RC helicopters and replacement parts!
